No – it’s not an app for your phone, this is my go-to appetizer for holiday parties.

Why?  The recipe requires only a handful of ingredients, it goes together in a snap, and most of the prep can be done ahead. And I love the combination – robust blue cheese, finely chopped figs and toasted pecans are simply great flavor partners.

One more thing about perfect party apps– the best ones are easy to eat when you’re juggling a drink, plate and conversation. These little balls won’t fall off the cracker or dribble down your chin onto your party clothes.  And there are no little picks or bones to clutter up your plate or fall off of your napkin.

California Fig & Cheese Appetizer Balls

Makes about 30 balls.

6 ounces gorgonzola or other blue cheese, or goat or feta cheese, crumbled or chopped

4 ounces 1/3 less fat or regular cream cheese

1 cup Blue Ribbon® Orchard Choice® or Sun-Maid® California Figs, stemmed and finely chopped

3/4 cup finely chopped, toasted pecans, walnuts or almonds*

  1. Combine gorgonzola and cream cheeses in medium bowl. Mix with a sturdy fork or spoon (or blend briefly in a food processor) until blended.   Mix in Figs.
  2. Form mixture into 1-inch balls. Cover and chill for up to 1 day if desired.
  3. Spread nuts or other topping on a plate. Roll each ball in topping.
  4. Arrange on a serving platter. Serve at once or cover and chill for 2 to 3 hours.

*Or roll in fresh or dried herbs or an herb blend such as Italian Herb seasoning, paprika (smoked or regular), or toasted sesame or other seeds.
